Mel Lowe, President of USO of Northern
Ohio, has been named the 2007 Judge Felix T. Matia/
Chester J. Koch Outstanding Veteran of the Year honoree
by the Joint Veterans Commission of Cuyahoga County.
Lowe, who will receive the award Feb. 4, will be
recognized for distinguished service to the country, and
for contributions in support of service men and women,
fellow veterans and their families, and the community.
Supporting the Troops-
Lori Davis of Minerva
heads a local volunteer effort to make scarves
for troops who are serving in Iraq and
Afghanistan. The project is part of Operation Bundle Up,
a program of the USO of Northern Ohio.
Some of the scarves headed to troops serving in
Iraq and Afghanistan carry a tag or indication
of who make the garment. This one was made with
a pocket where a prayer was included.
On January 24, 2007, Outfielder Jason
Michaels, first baseman Ryan Garko, second baseman Josh
Barfield and hitting coach Derek Shelton paid this visit
to the Northern Ohio chapter of the USO to donate 1,000
game-worn hats to local troops serving in the military
and to help bundle up some care packages.
Family
and Friends Military Support Group
is comprised of those who have either friends or
family in the military. They invite service members
and their families from all branches of service to attend
gatherings to discuss any issues and offer support.
Meetings are held monthly at
Panera Bread on Howe Avenue in Cuyahoga Falls. Contact
Sondra Hunt at 330-864-0461 for information.
